About Our Artificial Grass Service
What it is
Artificial grass is a tufted synthetic turf backed onto a permeable membrane, laid over a compacted aggregate base with proper drainage. Modern grasses use multi-tone yarns and thatch layers to look strikingly natural, nothing like the flat green plastic of 15 years ago.
Who it's for
Families with kids or dogs, homeowners tired of mowing, shaded gardens where real grass won't grow, holiday lets needing year-round green, and small courtyard gardens that don't justify a real lawn. Popular right across our Bucks and Surrey service area.
When you need it
You need artificial grass when your real lawn is worn to mud by kids or dogs, when the garden is too shaded to grow real grass, when you're tired of mowing every weekend from March to October, or when you want a green surface that looks pristine 12 months a year.
Why professional installation matters
The base is everything. Artificial grass laid over old lawn or on unlevelled ground bumps, dips, holds water and grows moss underneath within a season. We excavate, install a compacted MOT Type 1 and grit base with correct falls, membrane the whole area against weeds, and pin the grass down properly at the edges.
What Happens If You Leave It
Small problems don't stay small. Here's what we see when homeowners delay, and the corner-cutting mistakes that make it worse.
Puddling and drainage failure
Grass laid on ground with no proper aggregate base or falls puddles at every dip. Dogs sink in, the base holds moisture, and moss grows underneath.
Ridges, seams and lifting edges
Cheap installs skip the perimeter timber or the joint tape and glue. Edges lift within a year and seams show as visible stripes across the lawn.
Flattening and matting
Low-density or short-pile grass flattens permanently under foot traffic within 12 months. Higher-density 30–40mm pile with a memory-yarn backing stays upright for a decade.
Our Artificial Grass Process
A clear, in-person system from first visit to final handover, no surprises, no scope creep.
- 1
In-person site survey
We measure, check drainage, discuss pile height and colour, and bring physical grass samples to look at against your garden, not photos.
- 2
Fixed written quote, same day
Itemised, excavation, sub-base, grass, joint tape, edging, sand infill and disposal of old lawn. No hidden extras.
- 3
Excavation & sub-base
Existing lawn stripped, excavated to 75–100mm depth, weed membrane laid, then MOT Type 1 aggregate compacted in layers with a plate compactor.
- 4
Grass laid, jointed & pinned
Grass rolled out in the same pile direction, joints seamed with joint tape and adhesive, edges pinned to perimeter timber or ground pins every 150mm.
- 5
Infill, brush & handover
Kiln-dried silica sand infill brushed through the pile to weight and support the yarn. Full walk-round handover, 12-month workmanship guarantee starts.

Artificial Grass: The Detail
Grass specifications, pile, density, backing
For domestic lawns we specify 30–40mm pile height, high-density (17,000+ stitches/m²), C-shape or W-shape yarn (which recovers upright much better than flat yarn), and a latex or polyurethane backing with drainage holes at 100mm centres. Multi-tone thatch (brown + green) gives the natural look. We stock ranges from Namgrass, Nomow, Easigrass and TigerTurf.
Base build-up and drainage
Standard domestic base: 25mm sub-base membrane over consolidated ground, 50mm MOT Type 1 or Type 3 aggregate compacted in two layers, then 25mm of granite dust or grit sand as a laying course, blinded and screeded to a smooth finish. Falls at 1:100 to a lawn edge or French drain. Dog-heavy sites use a 100% open-graded aggregate for maximum drainage.
Edging, seaming and pinning
Perimeter edging is either pressure-treated timber (100x50mm) or a concrete edge kerb, the grass is fixed to this with 100mm galvanised nails at 150mm centres. Seams are cut clean with a Stanley knife on the third-stitch line, laid on joint tape with grass-specific PU adhesive, and weighted overnight while it cures. Done properly, seams are invisible.
Infill and long-term maintenance
Kiln-dried silica sand infill (5–8kg per m²) is brushed into the pile in 2–3 passes. It weights the grass, supports the yarn upright, and improves fire performance. Long-term care: a monthly stiff-brush across the pile to lift matting, occasional hose-off to rinse pollen/dust, and dog urine washed through with water. Expected lifespan 10–15 years on quality grass.
Residential vs commercial and pet-friendly options
Residential family lawns: 35–40mm multi-tone. Pet-friendly: shorter 25–30mm pile with 100% permeable backing and open-graded base for fast urine drainage. Commercial (nurseries, schools, holiday lets): high-density 40mm+ with shock-pad underlays for play areas. Roof terraces and balconies: shorter pile with foam backing.
