About Our Block Paving Service
What it is
Block paving is a system of individually laid concrete or clay setts bedded on a compacted sub-base and locking sand. Done properly, it creates a hard-wearing, load-bearing driveway or path that flexes with the ground without cracking, unlike poured concrete or worn tarmac.
Who it's for
Homeowners in Amersham, Beaconsfield, Chesham, Chalfont St Giles, Chalfont St Peter, Great Missenden, Hazlemere and Farnham who want a driveway that looks smart on day one and still looks smart in twenty years. Also suitable for landlords, commercial forecourts and larger residential developments.
When you need it
You need block paving when your existing driveway has sunk, cracked, weeded up, or become uneven enough to trip on. It's also the right call when you're changing the shape of your drive, adding a dropped kerb, widening for a second car, or building a new house.
Why professional installation matters
The failure point in almost every block paved drive is the sub-base, not the blocks. We excavate to the correct depth, lay MOT Type 1 to a compacted specification, use the correct edge restraints and finish with kiln-dried joint sand. That's the difference between a driveway that lasts 25 years and one that starts sinking in two.
What Happens If You Leave It
Small problems don't stay small. Here's what we see when homeowners delay, and the corner-cutting mistakes that make it worse.
Sunken tyre tracks
Blocks laid on a shallow or unconsolidated sub-base compress under wheel loads. Once ruts form, water pools, joint sand washes out, and the failure accelerates.
Weeds through every joint
Skipping proper kiln-dried sand or polymeric jointing leaves gaps that weeds and moss colonise within a season. Repeat weedkilling doesn't fix a bad joint.
Cracked and shifted edges
Without a haunched concrete edge restraint, the perimeter blocks migrate outward, joints open, and the whole surface starts to unravel from the outside in.
Our Block Paving Process
A clear, in-person system from first visit to final handover, no surprises, no scope creep.
- 1
In-person site survey
We visit, measure, take levels, check drainage points and talk through block choice, pattern and border options. No quoting from photos.
- 2
Fixed written quote, same day
You get a detailed, itemised price the same day, materials, labour, muck-away, drainage and edge restraint all included.
- 3
Excavation & sub-base
We dig out to the correct depth, remove spoil, install a permeable membrane if needed, then lay and compact MOT Type 1 in layers.
- 4
Laying & cutting
Blocks are laid to your chosen pattern with tight joints, cut cleanly around manhole covers, gullies and boundaries with a diamond blade, not chipped with a hammer.
- 5
Jointing, cleaning & handover
Kiln-dried sand brushed and vibrated in, surface cleaned down, and a full walk-round handover before final payment. 12-month workmanship guarantee starts here.

Block Paving: The Detail
Blocks & materials we lay
We work with the full Marshalls, Brett and Tobermore ranges, Drivesett Tegula, Argent, Savanna, La Linia, Alpha Antique and permeable Priora blocks. Concrete blocks give you the widest colour palette and best value; clay blocks (Vande Moortel, Ketley) hold colour longer and suit period or heritage properties. We'll bring samples to the survey so you can see the block against your brickwork before committing.
Sub-base depths and specification
For a domestic driveway carrying cars up to 3.5 tonnes we specify a minimum 150mm compacted MOT Type 1 over a permeable geotextile membrane, topped with 30-40mm of sharp grit sand. For softer ground, wetter sites, or where a van or motorhome is parked, we build up to 250mm. Every layer is compacted with a heavy plate compactor, not just rolled over once for show.
Drainage and SuDS compliance
Since 2008, driveways larger than 5m² that drain to the highway need either permeable construction or a soakaway. We handle both, permeable Priora blocks over a Type 3 open-graded sub-base, or ACO channel drains piped into a properly sized soakaway crate. This keeps you inside planning rules and stops water pooling at your front door.
Patterns, borders and detailing
45° herringbone is the strongest interlocking pattern for driveways, the pattern itself resists wheel-turning forces. 90° herringbone, stretcher bond and basketweave all look at home on period properties. A contrasting soldier-course border in charcoal or buff frames the drive and hides cut lines against curved boundaries. We can inlay house numbers, initials or feature circles at no extra design cost.
Residential vs commercial
Domestic drives run on a 60mm block and 150mm sub-base spec. Commercial forecourts, delivery yards and light industrial sites use 80mm blocks over a 250mm sub-base with a stabilised laying course. We handle both, including phased installations so a working site or shop stays open through the works.
