About Our Brick & Retaining Walls Service

What it is

A wall is a load-bearing masonry structure, brick, concrete block or natural stone, built on a foundation strip footing, laid in staggered courses with mortar joints, and finished with a capping or coping. Retaining walls also resist the horizontal push of the soil behind them.

Who it's for

Homeowners raising garden levels, building boundary walls, creating raised planters or replacing tired panel fencing with something solid. Also new-build front walls, driveway boundary walls and estate walls in Amersham, Beaconsfield, the Chalfonts, Great Missenden and Farnham.

When you need it

You need walling when a boundary needs to be permanent (not fence-repaired every 8 years), when a slope needs holding back, when you're terracing a garden, or when you're replacing crumbling old brickwork that's past repair.

Why professional installation matters

Walls fail from the ground up, bad footings, wrong mortar mix, no weep holes on retaining walls. We dig footings to the correct depth (600mm minimum for garden walls, deeper for retaining), pour engineered concrete strips, and lay everything to a proper string line with a 4:1 sand-cement mortar mix.

What Happens If You Leave It

Small problems don't stay small. Here's what we see when homeowners delay, and the corner-cutting mistakes that make it worse.

Bulging retaining walls

Retaining walls built without weep holes, drainage aggregate or the correct thickness bulge outward under hydrostatic pressure. Eventually they collapse, often taking the paving above with them.

Cracked mortar joints

Wrong mortar mix (too much cement, too little lime, or the wrong sand) shrinks and cracks. Water gets into every joint and freezes, accelerating the failure through every winter.

Sinking, tilting boundary walls

Walls on shallow or unreinforced footings settle unevenly and tilt. Once a wall goes 15mm off plumb it needs taking down and rebuilding, there's no straightening it in place.

Our Brick & Retaining Walls Process

A clear, in-person system from first visit to final handover, no surprises, no scope creep.

  1. 1

    In-person site survey

We measure, check ground conditions and levels, discuss brick and coping options, and confirm any planning or building control requirements.

  2. 2

    Fixed written quote, same day

Itemised for excavation, footings, bricks, mortar, drainage (retaining walls), coping and any weep holes or steel reinforcement.

  3. 3

    Footings & foundation

Trench excavated to the correct depth, concrete strip poured to spec (600mm+ for garden walls, deeper and wider for retaining), left to cure.

  4. 4

    Bricklaying & pointing

Bricks laid on 4:1 sand-cement mortar to a string line, courses checked with a spirit level, joints struck to a consistent bucket-handle or weathered finish.

  5. 5

    Coping, weep holes & handover

Coping bricks or stone bedded and pointed, weep holes verified on retaining walls, site cleaned down, 12-month workmanship guarantee starts.

Why Homeowners Choose Hi Design

Permanent, not periodic

A properly built wall doesn't need replacing every 8–15 years like fencing, it's a 50-year+ structure done right.

Holds back real slopes

Engineered retaining walls with drainage stone and weep holes actually hold banks back through wet winters.

Adds resale value

A tidy brick front wall lifts kerb appeal and appraisal value in a way that timber fencing simply doesn't.

Brick & Retaining Walls: The Detail

Brick and block options

Facing bricks (Ibstock, Wienerberger, Hanson) in London stock, red multi, buff, blue engineering, matched to your house brickwork wherever possible. Reclaimed bricks for period properties. Concrete blockwork (dense or medium-dense) for retaining walls and structural cores, faced with brick or rendered. Natural stone (Cotswold, York, Portland) for premium and heritage jobs.

Footings and structural spec

Garden walls up to 1.0m: 300x600mm concrete strip footing. Walls 1.0–1.8m: 450x750mm footing, often with A252 steel mesh. Retaining walls: full engineered spec with stepped footings, vertical rebar, and drainage aggregate behind. Anything over 1m retained ground gets a Building Control notice and structural sign-off, we handle the paperwork.

Mortar mixes and pointing

Standard mix is 4:1 building sand to cement with a plasticiser for workability, matched to the strength of the bricks (never mortar stronger than the brick). Lime mortars (1:1:6 or NHL-based) for period bricks and reclaimed work, softer, more breathable, correct for pre-1930 brickwork. Joints struck to a bucket-handle, weathered, or flush finish to match adjacent work.

Retaining walls, drainage and weep holes

Every retaining wall over 600mm gets a 150mm drainage stone backfill against a geotextile membrane, weep holes at 900–1200mm centres on the lowest course, and often a French drain tied into surface water. Skip these and hydrostatic pressure blows the wall out within a decade.

Copings, piers and detailing

Copings shed water off the top of the wall, brick-on-edge, precast concrete, or natural stone. Piers add strength and visual rhythm on longer runs (1.2–1.8m centres). Bull-nosed edging or engineering bricks for high-wear corners. We match every detail to your existing property.
