What it is
Turfing is the process of laying pre-grown, cultivated grass turf in rolls over a prepared soil bed. Done properly, a new turf lawn establishes in 2–3 weeks, roots down within a month, and gives you an immediate, useable garden without a seeding wait.

Turfing: The Detail
Turf grades and suppliers
We supply from Rolawn, Q Lawns and Turf Lawns UK, the three most consistent UK cultivated turf growers. Grades we work with: 'Medallion' or equivalent (fine ryegrass/fescue blend, family lawns, top choice for most gardens), 'Shade Tolerant' (fescue-heavy blend for tree-shaded gardens), and 'Meadow' or 'Wildflower' turf for naturalistic planting schemes. Turf is delivered on pallets, cut fresh, and must be laid within 24–36 hours.
Soil preparation and depth
Minimum 150mm of workable topsoil under turf. On clay sites we rotovate in a 50mm layer of grit or coarse sand plus organic matter to break the clay. On new-build sites we typically import 100–150mm of screened topsoil onto the existing subsoil. Pre-turf fertiliser (typically a balanced 6-9-6 or similar) is raked in before laying to give roots something to grow into.
Laying pattern and jointing
Turf laid brick-bond (staggered joints, never in a grid) so joints don't line up and open into cracks. Rolls butted tight with no visible gaps, we don't fill gaps with sand or soil, we cut and re-lay. Edges cut with a half-moon or long knife against a straight board or curved template. Every roll rolled or firmed after laying to knit it into the bed.
Aftercare, the first six weeks
Watering is the single most important factor: daily for the first 2 weeks (unless it rains heavily), then every 2–3 days for weeks 3–4, then only in dry spells. Keep off the lawn for the first 2 weeks. First cut at 4 weeks on the highest mower setting, never scalp new turf. Full instructions handed over on completion.
Residential vs commercial
Residential gardens: standard family-lawn grades laid on prepped topsoil. Commercial / school / municipal: high-wear ryegrass blends laid on reinforced soil profiles, often with underlying drainage layers. We install both.
